In many ways this was the most important location for
our research effort on impact tracers in the Permian-Triassic
boundary. Our paper in Science (see
reseach papers) had just been published (also
see Astrobiology paper). In this paper we reported on
the presence of magnetic grains and meteoritic particles in
the proposed boundary layer in samples provided by Greg Retallack
and Evelyn Krull. However, samples were in low supply so collecting
additional material to do a follow on study was essential.
We also wanted to see the outcrop ‘in situ’ so
that we could evaluate the stratigraphy and determine how
continuous the section along strike (laterally) was across
the proposed boundary.
